The Joe Blow Ducks Unlimited Memorial Award

Joseph Glenn Blow (“Joe Blow”) was born October 24, 1921 in Vanceboro, NC and died of cancer at the young age of 61 on June 3, 1982. Joe graduated from North Carolina State College in Mechanical Engineering where he met and later married Mary Elizabeth Parris. After serving in Guadalcanal as an officer in the U.S. Naval Air Corp during WWII, Joe and Lib returned to North Carolina to a successful retail and manufacturing L.P. Gas operation in Kensly, Durham, and Raleigh.

The gas business was where Joe met Ralph Morris, his hunting and development partner of a 4,000-acre track marsh on the Pamlico Sound. In 1961, Joe and Ralph built what has now become known as the NeuPamBa Duck Club. Over the next 20 years Joe and the people who were lucky enough to be his friends spent memorable times in the impoundments and along the marshes hunting ducks. Joe is remembered by his friends and was described best in a 2007 article, published in the Sporting Classics magazine, as “an heirloom, a shootinʼ gentlʼman.”

When Joe died in 1982, a memorial fund was start by Craig West and many of his closest friends and hunting buddies to honor Joe and his dedication to waterfowl and hunting. In 1985, the decision was made to use the memorial fund earnings to present a lifetime hunting license to a young Greenwing in Joeʼs honor. The North Carolina Lifetime Sportsman License was chosen as the memorial gift. Because of Joeʼs involvement with the Raleigh DU chapter, the gift is presented at the Annual Raleigh Chapter DU Banquet. In 1985, “Woffer” Davidian was the first recipient of the award and received a hunting trip to the NeuPamBa Duck Club.
